Weather and climate, Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta Mexico, one of Mexico’s top beach destinations is located in the state of Jalisco, on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, halfway in the Banderas Bay, and 8 miles south of Nuevo Vallarta in the Riviera Nayarit, in the contiguous state of Nayarit.

Located on the same latitude as Hawaii (20 degrees north), puerto vallarta weather is what is classic for temperate climate, with very constant temperatures and humidity all year round. Rainy season is more or less from June to Sep, with most rain in September, and little, if any rainfall the rest of the year. Even in the rainy season, precipitation mostly arrives in brief periods of strong rain, usually at night, and the rest of the day is mostly dry and very warm.

The city of Puerto Vallarta has normally been spared by hurricanes and storms, the locals even hypothesize that the Banderas Bay in some way was a natural barrier from these damaging typhoons, but this was not the case in the year 2002 when Kenna crashed into San Blas and seriously affected Vallarta, since that point a new hurricane passed close by in 2011, but didn’t affect the town. So in the last forty years Vallarta has only once been damaged by a hurricane, so you are quite safe when it comes to tropical hurricanes spoiling your vacation in Puerto Vallarta or Nuevo Vallarta.

December to April, the peak tourist season, are hot and bright. Weather in Spring and Autumn offers comfortable temperatures. Though rain can spoil a day at the beach, tropical electric storms can be a show, rain seems to march across the hills and the sea, and lightning bolts brighten the sky. Temperatures reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celcius) in the summer, and the humidity can add to the perception of heat.

During the winter, the climate changes considerably and temperatures move into the low to mid 80 degrees Fahrenheit (28-30 degrees Celcius), quite good for an amble along the beach. Nighttime temperatures in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta range from the 60′s to the mid 70′s (19-24 Celcius).
