Feng shui originated in China many thousands of years ago; it is a complex art that uses the laws of both heaven and earth. The purpose of this science is to live a successful, healthy and harmonious life. Feng translates to wind and shui to water; in Chinese culture they believe that wind and water are associated with good luck.
Feng shui is essentially an understanding of nature and the land or earth being alive, everything has energy and it is all about balancing this energy efficiently in order to live a healthy, balanced life. This all ties in with Taoism cosmology, which is based on the dynamics of ying and yang along with the five feng shui elements; wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each element represents a colour and they go together and interact in different ways, either positively or negatively.
The basics needed for feng shui are a compass and an octagonal grid containing the relevant symbols. The feng shui ba gua is an energy map of the home, in order to create good energy in your home you must plot your own ba gua and balance energies accordingly. Once you have plotted your ba gua you can then see which areas of your home are related to specific areas of your life, there are nine different ba gua areas. Career, relationships, family and ancestors then wealth, health, supportive friends and travel followed by creativity and children then study and knowledge, finally aspirations.
Some useful feng shui tips for the home are to live a clutter free life, clutter confuses the positive energies leading to a chaotic life, another good idea is to open windows in the home at least once a day – fresh air allows fresh chi to come in.
Wood is the element for the east and southeast, the colours representing wood are browns and greens; use these colours in the correct areas of your home to bring the energy for health, vitality and growth.
Metal represents clarity and preciseness, decorate the west and northwest of your home in white or grey, it will help to bring qualities such as efficiency and clarity to your life.
A balanced water element in the home will bring a refreshing and calming energy. Use blue and black in the north, east and southeast areas of your home as water is the symbol of abundance, so the use of water will help to harness the positive energy of its surroundings leading to a better recognition of life achievements. Use water features carefully in the home – they must be placed in the correct place to be effective in a positive way.
The fire element in the home is for passion and high energy, when fire is balanced it can bring energy to your career efforts and will help you to achieve recognition. Use fire colours for the south, northeast or southwest, fire colours are reds, orange, purple, pink and bright yellow.
For earth, the colours are light yellow, beige and various earthy or sandy shades; use these colours in the northwest and southeast areas of your home. A harmonious earth element will promote stability, nourishment and protection for all your relationships.
