It was said that the toy yoyo was developed in China; although no one can really be certain about this. Some people, on the other hand, are saying that it originated and was first utilized in Greece; but then there is some debate that said the yoyo did not start in either of the two countries. It is believed that it was used a fighting weapon in the Philippines.
It was said to have been a weapon by the Filipinos during the ancient time when hunter was the way of living there. The story goes that there was this hunter who has a big rock which seemed to be like a huge yoyo. He was watching over a prey that would pass below him, either as a game or an animal to hunt. At the proper moment, the hunter would throw the then assumed yoyo to whatever will come along, the moment he missed, he will just try again. There was no proper document to support this story, it was said the toy has been famous in the country ever since. One story to support this is the repetition of the anecdotes about the people who demonstrated the Duncan yoyos in 1930s; and from then on, the famous story has always been retold thereby making it a legend that many believed.
But it was not until an Irish, John McQuade, was said to be the creator of the first yoyo. Stories go that he was often seen making experiments, together with Matthew Martinez, his friend. They tried putting together a huge rock and some string, and played with them with the up and down motion. They realized that it gave them fun and enjoyment, but without the thought that they had made a breakthrough with just the string and the rock. This was actually the theory that further explained the beginnings of yoyo.
And then another version of the story happened with D.F. Duncan Sr., the owner of a hydraulic automobile brake with four wheels and became also the co-founder of it. He also became famous marketer of the famed meter in parking. He was really successful in doing this. And though he is saying that he was not the creator of the toy, he was liable for the popularity of it especially in the United States.
It was said that the Americans, most people in the United States too, began playing with yoyo when it was propagated and known as bandalore, termed by the British, in the 1860s. However, it was believed that the Americans first learned, only in the 1920s, that the actual word was yo-yo. A Filipino immigrant, Pedro Flores, started making the toy and gave it the same name. Flores was also the first who created a massive production of yoyo; everything happened only in his little factory in California.
