Offer a service to help organize closets for people. You would need to take everything out of the closet, clean it thoroughly, and then put everything back, in a neat and orderly fashion. You could even offer a premium service and add shelves or bins for a higher fee.
We all hate it. Okay, maybe it is just me. Every once in a while I take everything out of my closet (including all of the clothes I threw on the floor because they don’t fit anymore!) and go through them all to see what I want to keep, what doesn’t fit anymore, and what I should get rid of. It is so hard to get rid of some clothes, (even when torn or stained) for sentimental reasons, yet that type of reasoning is just silly!
Most people that have this problem need help from a person that is able to look pass all of the excuses. There are certain people that love organizing closets, if you are one of those people this is the ‘business idea’ for you. At least half, if not more, of the rest of society needs your ability to accomplish the impossible for them. You could actually make money doing this for someone one else, and enjoy what you are doing for income.
How much could you charge for this skill? Since peoples’ closets can vary greatly in size, you may want to charge per hour. This fee could vary from – an hour. Make sure that you always document your work, by taking before-and-after pictures of each job, or closet, just in case someone decides not to pay you. You will have proof of your work and the pictures provide a good resource for advertising your skills at organizing closets for future customers.
You could even offer a premium service and add shelves or bins for a higher fee. This also requires a bit of skill, but if you are able to provide shelves and bins to keep them organized, you will be able to make even more money from these items and the installation, if they require any. Most people just need help to keep organized once someone else organizes for them. Make sure that when you are done with their closet that your customers can easily keep the closet organized, by themselves. If they don’t keep it up, then nothing will help them. They will just need to pay you to come back on a regular basis.
This ‘business idea’ shouldn’t cost you a lot of money to start, begin by telling all of your friends and relatives that you are starting a business and what you will be doing. Ask them to ask their contacts if they might be interested in your services. Make sure that you have a reliable camera and reliable transportation. You may also need to bring three large containers, or bins, to sort everything into, from the closet. You could start by using large cardboard boxes or trash bags, if need be. Have one container for all items to keep, another for the might-keep items, and another container for the get-rid-of, or donate items.
Offer gadgets also that can help your customers to keep their closets organized. There are many on the market that keep ties, belts, shoes, and more organized. You might even leave a small booklet with your customers, which you have put together, giving them helpful hints on keeping their closet organized. Many times, it just takes learning good habits that they never acquired when younger. You could help them to train themselves to hang clothes up when taking them off, or just putting clothes away properly when freshly laundered. Sometimes, people could use help even learning how to fold clothes properly so that they stay organized, when put away.
Another point, when organizing peoples closets; you never want to throw other peoples things away, let them do it! When finished organizing, you can put the items in the ‘get rid of’ container in a sturdy trash bag or box, for your customer to take care of. You can offer to take it to a local donation point, for a small fee. If they pay you to take it away then they can’t argue later that you got rid of the items, without their permission.
If you do end up taking things to a donation site, be sure to get an itemized receipt for all of the items donated. At the end of the year, you can claim these donations for a small refund when filing your taxes. (Check with your tax consultant or accountant about doing this.)
