Introduction to oxygen molecule compounds:
Oxygen is the element with atomic number 8 and it is a member of the chalcogen group on the periodic table. It represented by the symbol O and it is in the highly reactive nonmetallic period 2. It forms compounds with almost all other elements. At standard temperature and pressure, two atoms of the element combine to form oxygen molecule or dioxygen. Oxygen molecule is a colorless, odorless, tasteless diatomic gas with the chemical formula O2. The third most abundant element in the universe by mass is Oxygen after hydrogen and helium and in the Earth’s crust it is the most abundant element by mass.
Compounds of Oxygen Molecule
The electron configuration of oxygen atom is (2, 6) or 1s2 2s2 2p4. The oxidation state of oxygen is −2 in almost all known compounds of oxygen. The oxidation state −1 is found in a few compounds such as peroxides. The uncommon oxidation states of oxygen in some oxygen containing compounds are: −1⁄2 (super oxides), −1⁄3 (ozonides), 0 (hypofluorous acid and elemental oxygen), +1⁄2 (dioxygenyl), +1 (dioxygen difluoride), and +2 (oxygen difluoride).
Oxygen forms compounds with almost all of the known elements, including some rarest elements like technetium (TcO−4), promethium (Pm2O3) and neptunium (NpO2). Oxygen reacts even with some of the least reactive elements such as xenon (XeO3), gold (Au2O3) and platinum (PtO2). Oxygen does not react with noble gases like helium, neon, argon and krypton in typical conditions.

Water (H2O) is the most familiar oxygen compound and it ia an oxide of hydrogen and. In a water molecule, Hydrogen atoms are covalently bonded to oxygen. the interaction of component atoms, oxygen and hydrogen, of water molecule with atoms of nearby water molecules partly contribute to its bulk properties.
Oxygen forms chemical bonds with almost all the other elements at elevated temperatures to give corresponding oxides due to its electronegativity. But, some elements like iron oxidize to iron oxide, (or rust, Fe2O3) readily at standard conditions for temperature and pressure (STP).

Quartz is a common crystalline mineral made of a compound of Oxygen and silicon called silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2). The Earth’s crust is formed also of oxygen compounds like calcium carbonate (in limestone) and silicates (in feldspars). The other oxygen compounds are water-soluble silicates in the form ofNa4SiO4, Na2SiO3, and Na2Si2O5 and they are used as detergents and adhesives.

The most important classes of organic compounds that contain oxygen includes alcohols (R-OH); ethers (R-O-R); ketones (R-CO-R); aldehydes (R-CO-H);carboxylic acids (R-COOH); esters (R-COO-R); acid anhydrides (R-CO-O-CO-R) and amides (R-C(O)-NR2) (where organic group is represented by the letter R). There are many important organic solvents like acetone, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, furan that contain oxygen.
