The OMICS journal of gerontology carries articles about the recent research and development in the gerontology discipline and the newer avenues for practitioners. The articles are published under an Open Access policy, and are peer-reviewed by members of the OMICS editorial board. Readers can transmit and reproduce the information with proper citation. With these objectives in mind, OMICS aims to remove barriers to scientific literature for the promotion of scientific knowledge.
It is predicted that by 2050, the number of 60-plus age individuals would be higher than the number of children up to 14 years. The number of measures including awareness and training targeted at people of big age has been bringing older adults and practitioners closer to provide the desired service.
In the US, recent studies in gerontology and geriatrics have shown Rhode Island experienced a dip in the population over 65 years, dropping to 151,881 in 2010 from the 2000 record of 152,402. Social aging primarily describes the changing roles a person has to play with older age.
Gerontology specialists are part of consulting clinics that focus on problems faced by the elderly. These include addressing memory impairment, psychological issues and other types of medical disorders. The assessment mostly follows a multidisciplinary approach as the fields are inter-related. The academics and the training groom the specialists accordingly, according with the fact that they need to work with people of older age and understand their special needs from the outset.
The demand for professionals working for older adults is on the rise, and this goes with the increase in the aging population in the last decade. As such, observers have note the social work and underlying geriatric education have received a significance boost, with substantial support. According to geriatric specialists, patients need to be under observation and conditions like vascular dementia need to be addressed, apart from cognitive changes in patient’s routine.
Psychological aging brings with it the changes that occur in sensory and perceptual processes. The symptoms of psychosis may be secondary to dopaminiergic agent, but certain patients experience hallucinations even before medicines are taken, and necessary education and support is required by patients.
A comprehensive care plan drawn up by geriatric specialists is required for the treatment of dementia-related behavioral and psychiatric disturbances. Other manic-like behaviour tendencies are accompanied by irritable mood, hyperactivity, reduced sleep, intrusiveness and counter-inhibition.
In the case of dementia, medication treatment does not prove too effective and is advisable to be used following environmental and non-pharmacological techniques. Reports of medical trials talk about success with the use of cholinesterase inhibitors, and placebo-controlled rivastigmine trial.
Medication treatment of behavioral disturbances in dementia is of limited efficacy and should be used only after environmental and non-pharmacological techniques have been implemented. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), based upon studies, has suggested that use of first-generation anti-psychotics might as well pose a risk of death as that of second-generation ones in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.
The OMICS Publishing Group, based in the US, aims at sharing scientific knowledge by publication of research articles in journals, organizing international conferences, and developing eBooks for free availability of knowledge to the scientific learners and researchers.
